January 28th, 2019

Hey guys!

  Let me tell you about my first mentally aware week of school! School started on the fourteenth but that doesn’t mean I was mentally aware of what was going on around me. I started class on January eighteenth and then it was the weekend. (I went home to San Emilio too!) So, I’m excited to update you all now that I’m not exhausted!

  I’m going to start with my classes. This year I basically have four history classes. It makes the homework slightly easier and it makes it more interesting for me. Now I have more motivation to look up the history of the country. I also like the instructors I have this year.

  Here are my classes this year:

  • Good Manners and Right Conduct

  •  Facilitating Learner Centered (the enrolment form didn’t have the full title lol)

  •  The Contemporary World
  •  Filipino (the title was changed apparently plus the title’s in Filipino so we’re going to leave it at Filipino lol)
  •  Science, Technology, and Society

  Which classes are my history classes? Readings in Philippine History, Good Manners and Right Conduct (it’s about society and the history of it lol), The Contemporary World (History of the world today), and Science, Technology, and Society. That’s about the Science and Technology of the Philippines and how it effects society.

  I had mentioned that I was going to post my assignments to my blog and I think that I should get to that. There’s a lot of documents on Filipino history but most of them are scattered and they may or may not be reliable so I want to have a page that has what I’ve collected from this year!

  I’ll be sure to tag my history friends. I know a lot of you come to this blog to read over what I’m doing so I don’t want to only post historical stuff but I do think what I’m going to learn this year is valuable and in that sense, I want to share it with all of you.

  This year I also have two tutors and one Filipino teacher. I need to write the notes I have from last year into the journal that I dedicated to the notes (since they’re all scattered and scribbles lol). I’m going to try and go out to eat once a month and show you all the places I have tried in Vigan. Again, these are all plans but I have a lot of pictures and I haven’t put a post to them.

  There’s a fifteen page document that my class had to read and my teacher wanted us to summarize it into 500 words max and after that she wanted us to summarize it into three sentences. Her point of the exercise is that the way that the students were taught were strictly to memorize but not to understand content. Personally, I liked the exercise. But then again, I read the whole thing thinking that I had to do it on my own and later I found out that I was part of group and we all could have split the content but that’s okay. I like reading anyway.

  An issue I was having when I got here a week ago is that I went straight from Texas to Japan. After Japan I went to Manila and from the plane in Manila I went on a bus to Vigan. I don’t know how many hours passed but I had to go from Austin, Texas to Dallas, Texas. After that I went from Dallas all the way to Japan. After I waited about two hours in Japan I went to Manila and from there I arrived in Manila. I left on January thirteenth and arrived in the Philippines at ten in the afternoon on the thirteenth. It took another right hours from Manila to get to Vigan City and it was rough.

  The first thing I noticed when I got back was that the soda tasted weird. Back home in Texas I drank a lot of soda and alcohol. (Thanks Manong) Lol. I’ll talk more about my Texas adventure later but because of that I got used to a lot more sugar and carbonation being in soda. Here in the Philippines the soda has a more natural sugar in it and it also doesn’t have the additives we do in Texas and that’s why it tasted weird whenever I got back.

  When I got to Vigan I had to enrol. I arrived at ten in the morning on the fourteenth. My Uncle followed me everywhere and it was funny because by the second time we walked back to my dorm he was like, “Ay, Nar. I can’t.” *heavy breathing* “I’ll wait at the apartement”. Lol. I love my uncle he’s too funny.

  I don’t have much more time to write this and whenever the timer says I need to save my documents I’ll go ahead and post what I’ve written. I want everyone to know that even though I did go home I didn’t announce it for the fact that I didn’t want to see you all. It’s because time is limited and I had to plan strategically. But rest assured. I’ll be back soon and this time I’ll be able to hang out with a lot of you!

January 21, 2019: Social Media

Naimbag na aldaw sa lahat! (Good day everyone) [Ilocano/English]

  For those of you who are new to Forward Flight, I started this blog on April 25th, 2018. This blog is a personal journal that records my thoughts and experiences of my travels in the Philippines. I created this as a way to keep in touch with those in Texas because back in 2010 when I visited for two months or so, it was hard for me to get a hold of my family and friends. In 2015 when I visited again for a short time, communication was easier but not as easy as it is now.

  Fun fact, the Philippines is the second most known country to use social media! The first is Singapore. During school, I had to sit through a seminar about journalism and media. They had gone over this fact with us but to prove my point here is a website that covers it. Smartinsights.com Philippines (Slides 106 - 142)

  Based on the weibsite, (Slide 39 of 153) an average Filipino spends 9 hours and 29 minutes on the internet while in the U.S an average person spends 6 hours and 30 minutes on the internet daily. I found this interesting but as I was sitting through the seminar I could voice my opinion on the matter and in my personal life, I didn’t start to use social media as much as I do until I started to go to school in the Philippines.

  When I first got to the Philippines in April, I was still in vacation mode. So, I paid more attention to nature and I enjoyed a good book while relaxing at the house. I remember my first day of school and how nervous I was. I didn’t want to speak because I knew that the other students were not as fluent in English as I was and I didn’t understand almost any Ilocano, Filipino, or Itneg. I later found out there was also Gay lingo that I needed to be familiar with as well as a dialect difference. The Ilocano my family spoke in San Emilio was not the same as the version spoken in Vigan City. Most words were the same but some words I knew did not line up with the words that the people around me knew.

  Originally, I would use Facebook to get a laugh out of my day and I still do but since so many people use Facebook in the Philippines and Facebook is cheaper to use than sending text messages, I prefer to use Facebook messenger to message my classmates and call them as well.

  When I lived in Texas, I didn’t add people unless I had physically met them or they had my sister added to their Facebook (which meant that they were family). Now, I have to add people because that’s the source of communication. Most Filipinos have more than one Facebook, which is what I had to resort to.

  I have literally never had to be in so many group chats. Back home if my friends added me to a group chat I would eventually leave because there was no purpose unless we were planning an event and even then, we’d stop talking on it after we were done planning the event. Now, I’m in a group chat for anything and everything. I try my best to clear the group chats because I don’t like having so many open.

  Individual messages are awful too. I enjoy having conversations with everyone but due to my anxiety, it’s not easy for me to keep the conversation going. Before I started to go to school in the Philippines I would purposely stop responding to all my messages on messenger if I had five or more unopened messages. It was overwhelming. Now, I have ten or so messages unanswered or buried due to me not seeing a notification or me muting a group chat.

  It truly is frustrating being in as many group chats that I’m in but most of the time the Ilocano is spelled different ways and even then, I can’t fully understand Ilocano so I can’t understand what people are saying in the group chats. Then, whenever they announce something someone gets upset with me because I didn’t see the announcement. I always have to remind them that it’s not that I didn’t see the announcement, it’s that I didn’t understand it because of the language barrier we have.


  What I am glad about is that people are willing to work with me. Many of the group members will try and explain what they can or direct me to someone who can help. I hope to be able to help them in the future with any of the English questions the may have. I have a friend who usually corrects my English instead of my Ilocano which I find is funny. It confuses my classmates whenever I mess up in English. What they don’t realize is that when a person learns or tries to learn another language, or languages in my case, they use different parts of their brain so it’s hard to keep up with different memory cards.

  Earlier I wanted to talk about more than one website and how the Philippines is active in social media more than the U.S but now that I think about it, that may not be true. I may not have used as much social media but I’m only a small portion of the population in the United States. There are a lot of statistics on that website that I linked up above so click on it and check it out!

  I want to cover more but I also like to keep these short so that I can spread them out and not bore you guys to death. If you’re checking in with me from the U.S, thanks and I miss you guys! January 14th, 2019: Maligayang Bagong Taon! - Happy New Year


Magandang Araw sa lahat! (Good day everyone!) [Filipino/English]

 I know that I haven’t been keeping you all updated. A lot of things have happened since November 26th which was the last post that I queued. So I want to try and do what I can for you all this year. Of course, around this time everyone begins their New Year’s Resolutions and such. Lately, I have been living the moments in front of me instead of recording them and as a person with a travel blog I know that I’m slacking.

 The first update that I’d like to announce is that I now have a public facebook that you all can add! Being in the Philippines has forced me to use Social Media a lot more and it isn’t exactly my favorite thing to do but for those of you who would like to conversate with me or would like to keep up with updates through Facebook (that are not on my personal already), you can add me! (I’ll probably clear out my friend list once a year depending on if a person has talked to me or not I don’t know. I do know that Facebook limits you to 5000 friends and to be honest… if I ever hit that talk to that many people a day I’ll probably not want to talk to another person in my physical life ever again. So, if you’re interested click here to add me! I don’t mind making friends or meeting new people. The more the merrier right?

 For now, I want to talk about the most recent and then I’ll backtrack for you all. I have many pictures that need to be posted so I’ll be sure to set those up. This year I would like to keep up with this blog and explore the Philippines more! I’m thinking to go to one new place every week. It depends.

 Basit Basit (Ilocano/Ilokano) Kunti Kunti (Filipino/Tagalog) what these words translate to is ‘little by little’ and I want that to be my motto for this year. Every small step counts and I want you all to see these small steps in written form. I do appreciate those of you who continued to look over my blog despite my disappearance. I will admit, sometimes it’s better to live life instead of record it but this past month I have been complimented on the fact that I have many stories and this is true. I like to share my experiences. I do what I can to make people smile and I like to hear people laugh.

 If I was learning one language and one language only I could focus but the fact is, I have missed out on a lot of culture and I need to learn at least three languages. If you are new, let me inform you that these three languages are Ilocano, Filipino, and Itneg. Now, there are connotations of these languages so I would like to clear some confusion.

 When I speak of Ilocano, most likely I will spell it with a ‘K’ and not a ‘C’ because originally the alphabet that the Philippines uses does not include the letter C. My tutor told me that the letter C is considered a ‘borrowed letter’.

 The whole of this blog is to keep you guys updated on what I’m doing and how I feel about what’s going on around me. Outside of trying to keep up with this blog better, I do hope that I can learn more Ilocano than anything else this year. I say that because it is the language I use the most next to English and I hope to be able to share more of it with you as time goes by.

 To be honest I think that’s the only updates that I really have. I’ll be sure to update everyone about Christmas soon but as I have said in the past I don’t like to make these super long. What I do want to do is go back to my original post and write replies to them. I like to think about them as a way to update what has happened so far!

 I would like to do this also to help organize my post! I try my best to organize. It’s hard especially with things that aren’t physically there but I’ll be sure to have a Mass Post key somewhere to help people refer to little things that I mention like the borrowed letters up above! I’ll also do this to help me not repeat myself a thousand times.

 When I first started this blog a lot of people were messaging me and it made me really happy to hear from you all. So don’t be afraid to send me messages or ask me how I am. Although, you have to remember that my Facebook Messenger is more of my connection to everyone in the Philippines and not just in the U.S so if you’re from either place. Please! Message me again if I don’t answer within a week. I do my best to answer everyone but I can fall behind.
